Biography
Early Years
Born in Austin, Texas. Moved to Maine where father grew up. Ran a tiny pottery gallery with sister one summer, worked at a fine crafts gallery later on. Had a controversial drawing printed on the high school literary magazine cover. Took French. Among other things, was a cellist, trumpet player, sweeper fullback on the soccer team, and a springboard diver. Awarded most advanced in English senior year.
France
Spent a year in Tarbes, France immersed in French language and culture. Wrote a volume of poetry. Did all the exercises in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Spent three glorious days in Paris with friend Nell, her husband and beautiful children. Explored everything. Visited Picasso Museum and had an epiphany as to why people love Picasso.
Mount Holyoke
After returning from France, started as an English major in Massachusetts. Took all the creative writing classes offered including one with the fabulous writer, Anita Desai. Fascinated with ideas of culture and the human mind, switched over to Anthropology, emphasizing East Indian Art. Worked as slide operator for the art department, sitting in on art history classes. Continued French studies. Graduated with a degree in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology.
Graphic Arts
Rode motorcycle to New Orleans. Struck up acquaintance with an ex-Greek Orthodox monk setting up as a fully-equipped graphic artist. Inspired.
Too hot in New Orleans, not enough ocean. Back in Maine, took Graphic Arts course at College of the Atlantic. Won class contest for a college recruiting poster. Won a logo design contest for a local sports store, who still use the logo. Worked in graphic design at local newspaper, and at Windswept Publishing house. Studied drawing privately with a professional artist. Decided to go back to school.
Columbus College of Art & Design
Researched art schools and set to work on a portfolio. Started work at graphic design firm, Z Studio in Bar Harbor, with a wonderfully encouraging and inspiring designer. Illustrated client work. Took supplemental job as art framer. Won scholarship to Columbus College of Art & Design, where majored in Illustration with a focus on printmaking. Showed in Zoological and Botanical Illustration exhibit and had work accepted by The Society of Illustrators for a New York show. Formatted and brought book to press for aeronautics professor at Ohio State University. Graduated summa cum laude.
Fine Artist
After a number of solo shows, now showing at Shaw Gallery in Northeast Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island and at Sharon Weis Gallery in the Short North of Columbus, Ohio.
